Just a picture of a really bad accident we saw on our way to an investigators house.
Havin' me some of my favorite! |
A 90 year old lady
(mom of some other missionaries' investigator) had her house burn down this
week, and so we drove out to help them salvage anything we could from the
wreckage. I was going to take a picture of the burnt down house too, but I
thought that would be disrespectful, so I didn't. But speaking of being
disrespectful, apparently I offended a member this week. We went to an old part
member family (60’s). The wife is a member but the husband isn't. When we came
in he asked me what my first name was. I told him "Elder." Then he
said no really what is it? I said, oh it's fine, You can just call me Elder. So
he did. But then on Sunday the wife came up to me and told me how they got into
a big argument after we left and how he was really mad at me because I wouldn't
tell him my first name. Well, out of respect for our calling FROM GOD I would
like to be called Elder, just as it says to tell everyone in the white
missionary handbook. It's like, I understand that you're not from our church.
But I would rather offend you than offend God by telling people my first name
when I know they would only call me by that. Oh well, I still apologized to her.
She didn't really accept my apology though, so whatever.
This Tuesday we had like a party day. President Augustin
called the whole mission a couple weeks ago on a conference call. We can't just
have a big meeting unfortunately since our mission is so big. We all thought he
was going to announce that we are starting to use the internet now, or the
mission was being split, but instead he announced a party day for us! Elder
King said he's never had one before and he's been out for 7 months now. So from
10-4 on Tuesday everyone from the Abilene and San Angelo zones went to the park
and played games, had pizza and just had a good time. There had to be like 4
different parties, again because the mission is so big we can't all gather in
one place. It would take too long. It was really fun though. We played lots of
volleyball. We also played this human battleship game where you sit on the
ground and throw balls over this sheet to try to hit the people on the other
side that you can't see. It was pretty fun. And I got really sunburned because
I didn't wear any sunscreen. I only got sunburned really on my neck. It's like
on those 2 inches where a white button up shirt would cover but where a t-shirt
doesn't. So that part of my body was all white because it never sees the sun,
so of course I got burnt. It is really funny to see missionaries in t-shirts
because of the weird neck tan caused by the collared shirts. Haha.
This week we met with Nicolas once. We taught the word of
wisdom and committed him to it. He said yes, that he would stop smoking and
drinking coffee. Then he wasn't at church on Sunday... that was really weird
him not being there. He's always there. At church I asked Martha how she was
doing, and she said so-so. I wonder what happened. But, this week at
church was still a good one. The Juarez family bought Elder King and I ties!
Pretty legit. Mine even came with a little pocket square too. I am wearing it
next Sunday. I'm excited. Then we also had Leonardo come this Sunday. I don't
think I've told you about him yet. He's a less active member who hasn't been to
church for like 15 years. He didn't even know there was a church here is
Abilene. Then a couple weeks ago he saw some missionaries on his street and
stopped them. Since then we've been over a couple times to his house and now he
was at church on Sunday. Then to our surprise, Eliseo was at church too.
Hmmm... Elder King doesn't think he is too legit about it, but I set up an
appointment with him for today anyway. We'll see how that goes.
Alexandria and Alizay we were only able to meet with once
this week. Since school started down here this past week things have been
pretty busy. We also only met with Cesar and Kathy (she's a less active member
just so you know. She is basically starting from ground zero too. She hasn't
been for a really long time) one time this week too. We had 2 appointments set,
but they punched on the second one.
We got a referral from the sister missionaries this week to
go visit this Spanish couple named Pablo and Anta. So we did. They were
Jehovah's witnesses. And they wanted to bash us. I just looked at that meeting
as a 45 minute Spanish lesson, because anything we said just bounced right off
them. When we tried to share anything from the Book of Mormon they wouldn't even
listen. They said no no no no. Then Elder King shared Moroni's promise with
them (without telling them this time it was from the Book of Mormon) and they
said it was so true. So that's what we left them with, our testimonies, and an
invitation to pray and ask God. You can't fight a testimony. Although, they
still tried. Then when Pablo said the closing prayer he asked Heavenly Father
to please correct us from our misguided path. And he also told us to stop
blaspheming and teaching lies to people. That was fun though. In other exciting
news, I can also add more words to the list of swears I have been called this
week. Every time someone swears at me I just laugh and think "what a good
Christian that person is." Because in Texas, everyone is Christian, so it's
good to know that all these Christians are following Christ's example and being
so loving... It's ok though. If you don't get sworn at, then I think you're
probably not a true missionary right? haha
Well, fam. I love ya'll so much. I hope this last week of
summer has been a good one for you like it has been for me. I can't believe
I've been on a mission for a whole summer now. Hey, I just thought of
something. So you know how Mondays are like the worst days ever because it
means the work week starts again and you have to go back to school for the
week? Well, now Mondays won't be so bad because you get to hear from me! Whooo! Love you mom! Love you dad! Love
you Meagan! Love you Courtney!
Love, Elder Moffitt
